Hi,

Welcome to Saab-i.

In this issue, there’s definitely something for everyone — news about three different Saab models, including details of our first SUV, the new Saab 9-7X, which was recently unveiled at the New York International Auto Show. Judging by its reception there, it’s going to make an impression on the North American market next year.

You’ll also find a unique insight into the design of the new Saab 9-3 Convertible from some of New York’s premier designers, and we’ve also included a preview of the 2004 X-Adventure series, presented by Saab Salomon, and details of two innovative Saab accessories.

Regards,

Knut Simonsson
Executive Director, Global Marketing
Saab Automobile AB

Vibrant, powerful, exciting, fresh and fun. Whilst this description certainly applies to New York, it could equally be used to describe the new Saab 9-3 Convertible. So we thought America’s creative capital would be the ideal place to gather some premier designers to give us their impressions of our latest model. The designers were all exhibitors at Inside Design Now - the National Design Triennial show at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 2003. To find out what they had to say, and to experience for yourself the innovative design of the Saab 9-3 Convertible, simply follow the links below.

In the latest issue of US Consumer Reports, an influential consumer magazine in North America, only eight European car models (those less than a year old) have been recognised as recommended buys’, and both the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 are among the very select eight.

Furthermore, the Saab 9-5 received praise for its quality and reliability by being awarded the title of Best Used Car Buy - the only European model to win this distinction alongside other, mainly Japanese, products. "It feels really good to once again find 9-5 in such a list, particularly as it is the only European car model included," says Lars Hellberg, head of Saab Automobile's Quality and Customer Satisfaction Department. "We have been carrying out some decisive quality improvement work and this result proves the value of what we are doing."

The Saab 9-5 is also well appreciated in its Swedish homeland. In the Swedish version of the top motoring magazine, Auto Motor and Sport from February this year, drivers were asked to describe their ownership and driving experiences, and were full of praise for the Saab 9-5. The magazine reported that "Saab 9-5 owners are happy with a problem-free and safe car which has very good comfort. Readers give the car very high scores in all categories. The most positive remarks refer to the "long journey" ability of the top-of-the-range Aero model."

One owner commented: "I have driven over 20 different cars but never driven one over 100,000 kilometres with so few problems."

As well as the general quality of the car, readers were particularly impressed with the driver's environment in the Saab 9-5, while the most common reasons given for buying the car were Saab’s high standards of safety. It’s been described as the ultimate in endurance and adventure, and it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. The X-Adventure Series, presented by Saab Salomon, is the qualification stages for the overall Raid World Championships. It pushes competitors to their absolute limits, as they compete in this long-distance, multi-disciplined race event.

The challenges facing each team include mountain biking, adventure running, rope works, inline skating, canoeing, skiing and sea kayaking, and the teams of three racers and one assistant will need to muster all their mental and physical strength in the pursuit of glory.

The X-Adventure kicks off in Morocco in May, amongst the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas mountains and surrounding valleys, with up to fifty teams competing for a coveted place in the finals. Further events will take place in the USA in June, France and Italy in July and Australia in September.

Saab is a proud sponsor of both the X-Adventure and Raid World Championships. The blend of power, speed, control and exhilaration involved is a perfect reflection of the Saab driving experience — find out why by watching ‘White Knuckles and Whitewater’, the Saab Aero Online Movie.

Make light work of cycling trips with this innovative Saab accessory. Simply fit the bike to the holder at door height, and the bike is raised safely onto the roof rack with the aid of gas springs and locked with the unique latching feature. Made from sturdy yet lightweight aluminum, the holder can be adjusted to hold a variety of bikes in an upright position. Ask your local Saab dealer for more information.

Driving the Saab 9-3 Convertible with the top down and the wind in your hair is certainly a thrill, but sometimes you might want to enjoy a slightly calmer environment. The Saab Wind Deflector accessory controls and reduces the airflow inside the cabin, creating a smoother, quieter drive. It’s simple to mount and remove, and the flexible joints allow it to be folded twice and packed conveniently in its cover in the luggage compartment. For more details, ask at your local Saab dealer.
