Hi

As we approach the winter holidays, may I wish you season’s greeting from everybody here at Saab, and welcome to the last issue of Saab-i for 2005. We’re particularly pleased to announce that the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan has just been awarded the “Top Safety Pick Gold Award” by the IIHS safety organisation – read more about this prestigious award in the article below.

In this issue you’ll also find news of the new Saab 9-5, including the new TiD diesel engine and the revolutionary new BioPower engine. Furthermore, you’ll also get to see the latest TV commercial for the new Saab 9-3 SportCombi, and we’ll continue our look at the Saabs of the past – this time we’re heading back to the swinging sixties.

Best regards,

Knut Simonsson,
Executive Director,
Global Brand and Sales Operations
Saab Automobile AB

Earlier this month, the Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan was awarded with the prestigious IIHS "Top Safety Pick Gold Award." Naturally we were immensely proud to receive this recognition, since it is a great reflection on the work put in by everyone at Saab, especially the designers, engineers and assemblers involved.

The Saab 9-3 Sport Sedan was one of only a handful of cars that fulfilled the criteria to win the award – to pass the front-impact, side-impact and the rear-impact whiplash tests with the maximum overall rating in each test.

More great news for Saab safety — this time from a recent series of tests carried out by the Thatcham Insurance Research Centre in the UK. After the latest round of tests, the entire range of Saab 9-3 and 9-5 models was awarded the highest rating for protection against neck injury following a rear-end collision.

The Saab innovation which helped us to achieve this success is the Saab Active Head Restraint (SAHR), which is fitted as standard on every Saab model. To read the full press release on the Thatcham tests, please click on the link below.

Looking at the new Saab 9-5 Sedan and 9-5 SportCombi models, you can see that a lot has changed. In fact we’ve made close to 1400 improvements, many of which are not obvious to the naked eye, such as the new chassis settings that offer a more sporty and responsive drive. One new feature that certainly will stand out is our new 150 bhp TiD turbo diesel engine.

This powerful addition to the Saab 9-5 range combines impressive performance with excellent fuel economy, delivering a massive 320 Nm of torque whilst remaining fully Euro 4 compliant. This makes it a particularly attractive proposition for company car drivers, since Euro 4 compliance attracts beneficial tax rates in many countries.

Saab BioPower has been available for less than a year, yet this innovative technology has already been recognised as a huge step forward by Popular Science magazine.

Every year, this widely read magazine publishes a list of the top 100 groundbreaking ideas within the field of science and technology. This year, the Saab 9-5 BioPower model earned its place on the list, winning the “Best New Product” award in the car category. The list is the product of almost one year’s testing of thousands of new products, so making it onto the list is a huge achievement in itself. “We are looking for the products that affect our lives not only in the present day, but also those technologies that will also have an effect on the future,” said magazine editor Mark Jannot.
