Welcome to the first Saab-i of 2006! This year we’ll be celebrating 20 years of production of Saab Convertibles, and in this issue we have news of a very special Saab 9-3 Convertible — the 20 Years Edition.

We also have details of a new turbo diesel engine option for the Saab 9-3 Convertible, and you’ll have the opportunity to see the latest dramatic TV commercial for the new Saab 9-5.

The first Saab Convertible prototype was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motorshow in the autumn of 1983. Saab surprised the world by displaying a two-door, Saab 900-based concept car, with its roof removed and replaced by an electrically-powered soft-top.

It was a well-proportioned, roomy, genuine four-seater and it created such enormous interest among public and press that Saab made a decision in April 1984 to put the car into production. The Saab 900 Convertible was launched in 1986 and was a success right from the start.

Saab has been producing Convertibles now for twenty years, and we’d like to celebrate the occasion in style. That’s why we’ve designed the “20 Years Edition”.

This exciting new model comes in a choice of three distinctive metallic finishes — a unique Electric Blue, Jet Black or Parchment Silver. It features a parchment interior and leather sports seats with accents in blue leather, while the glossy colour-matched tonneau cover and door trim accentuate the sporty exterior.*

The distinctive look is further enhanced by the stylish 17x7.5” 5-spoke alloy wheels and the rear trunk-mounted spoiler (Standard on the Aero, available as an option on the Vector model), and the colour-matched door handles are fitted as standard.

The car will be fitted with the full range of powerful Saab engines, from the new 1.9 TiD turbo diesel to the extraordinary performance of the Aero model, with its 250 bhp V6 Turbo engine.

There was considerable interest in the Saab stand at the Brussels Motorshow earlier this month, as we unveiled the new 1.9 TiD engine option for the Saab 9-3 Convertible. This powerful turbo diesel engine should prove to be a popular choice, since it combines a typically feisty Saab performance with excellent fuel economy.

The hi-tech Common Rail Multiple Injection engine features variable turbo charging with fuel optimising pilot jets, which means you can enjoy outstanding engine responsiveness at both high and low revs. The 150 bhp engine produces an impressive 320 Nm of torque that, together with the agile handling characteristics of the chassis and suspension, promises an involved, active drive.
 
 

Fuel economy has become a hot topic in recent years, and both company car and private drivers will benefit from the competitive figures of just 6.3/7.4 l/10 km.* Not only that, but our revolutionary particle filter is fitted with an electronically controlled self-cleaning technology, which gives improved environmental friendliness via reduced CO2 and particle emissions.

Both the manual and automatic versions of the new 1.9 TiD Saab 9-3 Convertible are fitted with a six-speed gearbox. The extra gear gives greater engine performance and responsiveness during acceleration, as well as a quieter, smoother drive. Special edition accessories for your Convertible
You can give the interior of your 9-3 Convertible the 20 Years Edition feel with the addition of an Aero steering wheel. This stylish sports wheel features a thick ergonomic rim with accentuated thumb grips for greater control. The leather trim and metallic effect inserts will also make the perfect complement to another accessory — the centre consol trim, which has been designed to match the other metal-finish details of the interior.


 

By adding colour-matched door handles and a colour-matched or contrasting rear spoiler, you can boost your car’s dynamic design and give it a sportier appearance. The spoiler also improves aerodynamics and provides stability by reducing lift forces at the rear.
