Saab will be unveiling something rather special at the Stockholm Motor Show today – a Saab BioPower Hybrid Concept in the shape of a Saab 9-3 Convertible. This groundbreaking new concept brings together the performance advantages of Saab BioPower and electric power to create the world’s first fossil fuel-free hybrid vehicle, as well as the first hybrid soft-top.
The car runs on E100 fuel (100% bioethanol), and the 2.0 litre turbo BioPower engine is assisted by two battery-driven electric motors, offering not only exceptional environmental friendliness, but also a substantial increase in power. In fact, it’s capable of briefly generating three times the torque of its gasoline-only equivalent – a staggering 785 Nm! |

When using pure bioethanol the engine is not adding CO2 from fossil sources, and where an equivalent Saab engine running on petrol would produce 210 bhp, the BioPower version is capable of 260 bhp and an impressive 375 Nm of maximum torque. Drivers can then activate an electric-only ‘Zero Mode’, for energy-saving, fuel-free city driving.
The BioPower Hybrid concept builds on the market success of Saab’s current 9-5 BioPower model, but takes it to the next level by using 100% bioethanol and adding electric power to reduce fuel consumption.
